ABOUT MARIA’S SOUP KITCHEN

Maria-Anita Pieterse runs the Mount Pleasant Saints Soup Kitchen and Community Outreach Programme with the motto “Anybody who is hungry, here is food, you can come and eat.”
Maria is known as the “Mother of Mount Pleasant” and with the support of her two sons and family, they have been preparing meals for around 200 people per day, for the past seven years.
Maria rises with the roosters in the mornings to ensure that the elderly in her community have at least a cup of tea to drink and a sandwich to eat, so that they don’t have to take their medication on empty stomachs.
Maria relies on donations and her own disability pension to fund her Soup Kitchen, which she runs from her own home. Inevitably, funding remains a great concern and donations are not always forthcoming timeously.
The annual Blanket Raffle is an effort to supplement funds for the rapidly approaching winter months.
