Coastal Verge Clearing

Over two days in August volunteers joined together to clear the sloot and weed the sidewalk towards the curve on Kus Road. Gravel, dirt, and weeds had clogged the sloot so it could no longer channel water away from the road and it looked bad. Cold wind and rain did not stop the volunteers from getting it done.

Our coastal strip is a fragile ecosystem that we must protect. Municipal subcontractors have been spraying toxic chemicals onto our green spaces. These chemicals kill the vegetation and the animals that eat the vegetation. The poisons leach into the soil and end up in the ocean, harming sea life and subterranean organisms.

We must take responsibility for Sandbaai to prevent this destruction. A worker who lives somewhere else and is hired by someone who lives somewhere else who is hired by someone at the municipality is never going to care as much about our coastline as we do. If we want it done right, we must do it ourselves.

Join us in volunteering to improve Sandbaai. Send an email or a WhatsApp to the SCVID to find out about the next opportunity to help, check the various Sandbaai WhatsApp groups for posts about volunteer projects, and attend the Sandbaai Ratepayers Association’s regular meetings.
